Governor Walker Introduces Budget Repair Bill

BUDGET REPAIR BILL

Friday Governor Walker introduced a plan requiring state employees to contribute 12 percent toward their health care premiums, or half the national average, and just over 5 percent toward their pension which is about the national average. In exchange, the Governor has promised to save 7,500 state workers from layoff. In addition, state employees will not be required to talk furlough days next year.

The state budget has a structural deficit of over $3 billion and a funding shortfall of over $130 million for the current fiscal year ending in June. The proposed changes to state employee benefits would part of larger effort to balance the state budget.

The Governor’s plan will save Wisconsin taxpayer’s $30 million over the next three months and nearly $300 million over the next two years.
